Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is designed for remote workers and freelancers: valid for up to 5 years with a stay of up to 180 days per entry (with extension). Proof of income/savings and remote employment is required.

Income from abroad is taxed only when imported into Thailand in the year of receipt - the rules have changed, check the current ones. Life is inexpensive.
Cost of living
Chiang Mai is the most budget-friendly, Bangkok is more expensive, the islands vary. Strong community of nomads and coworking spaces.
